Stability, balance and fluidity...the 3 essentials of efficient posture and health of the spine.
Our posture directly impacts the alignment of the spine and, with the spine being the central channel of the nervous system, the overall health and vitality of the body. A healthy spine means that the vital energy of can flow freely throughout the channels of the nervous system communicating and nourishing all the organs of the body.
We also express ourselves through our posture. The way you carry yourself can send out messages making you seem confident, relaxed or empowered. And shoulders back and relaxed can make you feel better about yourself too.
So where do poor postural habits come from?
Habits can be learnt at school age: carrying heavy bags filled with school books, slouching over a screen, slumping forwards because you are taller than your mates and you just want to ' blend' in.
As we move into the work place, some work environments may put extra stress on the back: excessively strenuous or repetitive jobs, jobs where you are seated over long periods of time and stress which causes your muscles to tense and store this tension.
Over time, poor posture can lead to back pain, neck pain, headaches, humped back and repetitive strain injury.
So, where does our yoga come in?
In all our yoga sessions we work on creating a firm foundation in the body. From the beginning of the practice we engage the core of our body (stomach, back and glutes) bringing in the strength and stability. We work on mobility and movement of the hips, shoulders and spine to release stored tension. The flow of the poses retrains our mind to move the body with more ease and fluidity.
By creating a regular routine of yoga you can positively influence your spinal health and posture.
